Authorities are keeping silent about their investigation involving a former Butler City police officer whose 3-year-old grandson found and fired a gun at his home.
The toddler fired the .38-caliber revolver on Saturday while visiting his grandparents, Francis “Jack” and Carla Plaisted, at their home on McKinley Avenue, state police in Butler said. The shot burned the boy’s face, but his injuries were not considered serious.
Paramedics took the boy to Butler Memorial Hospital and he was later treated and released from UPMC Children’s Hospital in Lawrenceville.
State police are investigating the incident because Jack Plaisted worked for the Butler Police Department for 32 years. He retired in 2007.
“It’s inappropriate for me to comment while it’s still under investigation,” Plaisted said Friday.
No charges had been filed as of Friday afternoon. District Attorney Richard Goldinger did not return calls.
Police said the boy found the handgun in the arm rest of a recliner in the living room. Carla Plaisted was at home at the time. Jack Plaisted was not.

State police are investigating the circumstances of an accidental shooting that left a Butler toddler with minor injuries.
The incident was reported Saturday, March 1 just after 8 p.m. at a home on McKinley Avenue.
Reports indicate the boy suffered powder burns on his face when he accidentally fired the gun while visiting his grandparents. The gun was found in the armrest of a recliner.
Investigators say the child’s grandfather is a retired butler city police officer. He was reportedly not home when the shooting took place.
The boy was treated as an area hospital and released, according to officials.
At this time, no charges have been filed.

Don’t forget to change your clocks before you go to bed Saturday night.
Daylight Savings Time begins this weekend on Sunday at 2 a.m. Of course you will lose an hour of sleep, but the good news is we’ll gain an hour of sunlight each day and hopefully be moving into warmer temperatures as we head into Spring.
Officials remind you Daylight Savings is a good time to put new batteries in warning devices such as smoke detectors and hazard-warning radios.
